Design trends from the Milan Furniture Fair

Brisbane designer, Stacey Stojcevski has just returned from Italy where she immersed herself in the latest and greatest concepts in interior design at the Milan Furniture Fair – the largest trade fair of its kind in the world. On her return we asked Stacey where she sees design headed in the near future and what trends made a lasting impression.

Q: What colours and colour combinations are you seeing more in hospitality interior design?

A: At the Milan fair we noticed a lot of rich colours coming through – emerald greens, and deep royal blues contrasted with rose gold and brass. The colours are bold and distinctive – not a lot of subtlety in the colour palette, but a lot to catch the eye.

Q: What design trends do you predict will influence hospitality design in 2019?
A: Leading into 2019 I think we’ll see some African, tribal influence make its way into Australian interior design. I’m seeing lots of bold, geometric prints and earthy colours.

Q: What design trend grabbed your attention the most?

I love the fine tubular metal work in furniture coming out of Europe – the detailing is very refined and sophisticated. We saw a lot of this at the Milan Fair – chairs and occasional tables perched on very fine, elegant legs and backing supports styled from thin tubing.

Hand Tufted Rugs

Like a spectacular art piece on the wall, an expertly

designed custom rug can focus the eye and act as the pin that pulls an entire interior design scheme together.

A warm, luxurious wool rug can also bring a sa

tisfying sense of contrast to a room when set against the cold, unyielding finish of tiles, marble, or timber flooring.

A hand made rug, woven from the best materials will be able to take the same punishment handed out to

hard flooring, while still looking its stylish best.
Along with wall-to-wall carpeting, Artistic Floori

ng specialises in custom designed hand made Tuft

ed rugs made from the highest quality and best performing wool available.

To talk to someone about designing a quality, hard-wearing and visually impressive rug for your next project contact David Williams at Artistic Flooring.

One-of-a-kind custom carpets for designer homes – giving you the creative edge

For 39 years Artistic Flooring has created beautiful one-off custom-designed carpets for some of Australia’s most recognisable luxury hotels and clubs – and now we’re offering this highly specialised service to discerning interior designers of private homes.

The opportunity presents interior designers with a significant creative edge when developing design proposals for potential new business. Your design concepts are no longer limited to what your carpeting specialist can supply. Now, the world is your oyster.

In the words of our Managing Director David Williams, “We can take a design – it doesn’t have to be a pattern, it could be any design at all, even a child’s painting, and turn it into a one-of-a-kind carpet for your client.”

At Artistic Flooring we only use the finest quality New Zealand and British wool in our Axminster carpets. Why Axminster? Because it’s the world’s best manufacturing technique to ensure complete creative control.

“Axminster has the highest thread count per square inch,” according to our MD “The more wool used, the thicker and more luxurious the carpet”

“Our Axminster carpets are also woven in perfect squares. This, combined with the high thread count, means patterns are sharper and curved lines have greater definition.”

“We can essentially ‘sculpt’ the carpet to create the feeling that you’re looking into the depth of the design. It brings it to life even more and that’s truly something special,” Mr Williams said.

And we control every aspect of the carpet manufacturing process – from initial design through to spinning, dyeing weaving and finishing the final product. This complete manufacturing and creative control means you get exactly what you ordered, every time.

Artistic Flooring can also recreate new carpets from old heritage designs – a highly specialised service of interest to designers engaged in the restoration of old and heritage-listed homes.

“During the renovation of an almost 100 year-old building in Brisbane recently, the original Roaring 20s-era carpet was discovered, still intact, under several generations of flooring,” Mr Williams said. “We were asked to recreate that original design – a blue and green tartan – in brand new carpeting.”

“The end result was spectacular and it was wonderful to be part of a project where there was so much respect for the history of the building.”

Make an impression from the moment your patrons step in the door.

The hospitality clubs sector in Australia is extremely competitive. Walking around the Hospitality and Gaming Expo in Brisbane earlier this month, brought home to us just how competitive it really is. Clubs need an edge, a distinct point of difference, to stand a chance of carving for themselves a piece of the increasingly discerning patron pie.

This is where Artistic Flooring can help.

Artistic Flooring makes custom designed carpets. Think of it as a work of art gracing the biggest canvas in your club, your floors. We can take any design – a painting, a logo, a motif – and faithfully recreate it in luxurious wall-to-wall Axminster carpet.

We’re the Pro Hart of the carpet world. And we can guarantee that your carpet will be the only one of it’s kind anywhere in the world.

Not just a pretty face

It’s not just about beauty – hospitality carpets also need to withstand daily punishment from foot traffic, spilt food and drinks and moving furniture. Year after year. This is why we offer a 20 year warranty on all our Axminster carpets when paired with our quality underlay.

We’ve been doing this kind of work for almost 40 years and we understand the highly specialised needs of the hospitality and gaming industry.

With Artistic Flooring you don’t just get beautiful carpets, you also get peace of mind.

We’re quick on our feet

Commissioning custom designed carpet doesn’t have to be a difficult or lengthy process,  not when you’re dealing with people who’ve been doing it as long as we have. We can turn around a custom design project in as little as 8 weeks – from design sign-off to delivery of the finished product.

And if you’re stuck at a creative road block, our experienced designers will work with you to create a unique design that makes a statement.

Don’t just take our word for it…

If you paint the Mona Lisa’s face green can you call it an original?

Painting a red car blue doesn’t mean you now drive a custom-made vehicle. Anymore than adding rhinestones to a sun dress makes it haute couture. True custom design is more than just changing a colour or adding a bit of tat to an existing design. True custom design is about creating something as unique and individual as you are. It’s an organic process that starts with a kernel of imagination and ends with the flowering of a masterpiece.

At Artistic Flooring we don’t tweak a library stock design and call it custom. We work with you to create a design found no where else in the world. If you have your own design in mind – we’ll turn it into your new carpet.  And if you’re stuck at a creative road block, our experienced designers will work with you to create a unique design that reflects your artistic vision.

At Artistic Flooring we love what we do, so for us it’s easy. And we can make it easy for you too. Custom designed carpet doesn’t have to hard or prohibitively expense – not when you’re dealing with people who’ve been doing it as long as we have. It also doesn’t have to be a long process – we can turn around a custom design project in as little as 8 weeks – from first meeting to delivery of the finished product.

And if you need that extra something to help you impress a potential client, we’ll work with you to win them over.

Designer carpets headed for home

While it’s not our usual bread-and-butter, when we received the call to design custom Axminster carpet for a private home we thought, why not? We specialise in high quality carpet for the hospitality sector – why wouldn’t someone want that kind of 5-star luxury in their own home?

Emma Graham from Carpet One, Logan City, was the person at the other end of the phone enquiring on behalf of her client.

“The client has a lovely home which unfortunately received some damage due to flooding,” Emma said, “They wanted a specific design for their carpet, which we couldn’t get, so I immediately got on the phone to Warren and the team at Artistic Flooring. I knew they’d be able to help.”

Our designer Stacey Stojcevski from S. Ellen Design visited the home with Emma and discussed with the client the look they were after.

“The brief was to design a carpet that would work throughout the entire house; bedrooms, living areas, the lot,” Stacey said, “I was asked to produce something that would work with the existing fittings, fixtures and wall colours, which provided a challenge as there were a range of colour schemes in play.”

Stacey presented the client with two options as well as room mock-ups, using photos of the home’s interiors, so the client could get a real sense of how the house would look and feel with the new carpet installed.

“The client was very, very happy with the end result,” Emma said, “Stacey is just brilliant at what she does. She really takes the time to understand what they’re trying to achieve.”

While the client was thrilled with Stacey’s work, Emma was equally impressed by how smoothly the project ran in the experienced hands of David and Warren as well as Chris, who managed the carpet installation.

“The boys took control of the project and kept it on course,” Emma said, “It all ran like clock-work and all I had to do was keep the customer up to date and make sure they were happy. They made my job easy.”

Managing Director of Artistic Flooring, David Williams, said the whole team enjoyed working with Carpet One and the client and hoped to do it again in the future.

“It was such a positive experience that we’ve made the decision to launch ourselves into the domestic home market,” David said, “It’s a whole new ball game for us, but one we’re looking forward to – we’re always open to new horizons.”

hard to impress client

Winning over that hard-to-impress client

“Meh.”

That’s the sound of a potential client who’s very hard to impress. We’ve all come across them – the discriminating type that wear their lack of enthusiasm like a badge of honour. They enjoy making people work for their approval and don’t give it away lightly. They’re a hard nut to crack.

When you work with Artistic Flooring we’ll help you tackle that stubbornly underwhelmed client by arming you with the tools you need to break down their defences.

We’ll give you as much or as little help as you need. We can create mock-ups of how a custom-designed carpet will look in a room, provide professionally manufactured samples and advise on design aspects that work best in a large format custom carpet. Our experienced designers can even create an entire design-scheme for you if you’re short of time or ideas.

“Our aim is to support designers through the design process,” our Managing Director, David Williams said, “Preparing a presentation for an important client is a big project. The more people you have working on it, fine-tuning it, checking the detail, the better.”

“Floors can sometimes be included as an after-thought on design presentations, which is a mistake,” David said, “Floors are the biggest canvas in a room – if you don’t get the foundations right, everything else suffers.”

“We can help you get the fine details on carpet design right. This will give you the edge over your competitors and could make all the difference to the outcome.”

Waterloo Station Hotel rises from the ashes

A devastating fire at the Waterloo Station Hotel in Adelaide’s northern suburbs was the catalyst for a $10 million renovation that engaged the services of hospitality flooring experts, Artistic Flooring.

Ken Milne from Ken Milne Architects in Adelaide was the lead designer on the project, charged with bringing the popular waterhole back to life.

“Carpets are one of the biggest design elements in a room, so I always aim to create something that gives a room a lift, a positive energy, and I think this design achieves that,” Ken said, “It also had to translate through the bistro, dining and gaming areas so we needed something that was versatile.”

Ken said that while looks are important, a carpet’s design must also take into account practical considerations.

“It’s important when designing carpet for a hospitality venue, that your design minimises the appearance of stains,” Ken said, “Carpet stains are unavoidable in hotels and bars so you have to work with that reality in mind.”

Ken said he had only good things to report about his experience working with our team from Artistic Flooring.

“Artistic Flooring were excellent to work with, and the finished result impressed us all,” Ken said, “Most importantly, it impressed the client.”

Wynnum Tavern gets the Artistic Flooring touch

With its major refurbishment recently complete, patrons and visitors to Wynnum Tavern are now enjoying the kind of luxury underfoot that only a quality Axminster carpet guarantees, thanks to the work of Artistic Flooring.

The managers of Wynnum Tavern, centrally located in the rapidly growing seaside suburb of Wynnum in Brisbane’s east, are thrilled with the new interior design and with Artistic Flooring’s three new carpets which underpin the stylish new look.

The carpet in the Sports Bar is a one-off, specially designed to meet the unique design brief of the refurbishment project. It’s highly geometric ochre and charcoal design strikes a confident chord, without drowning out other design elements in the room.

The fun and whimsical carpet in the Gaming Room is called Taylor, one from Artistic Flooring’s exclusively designed Welcome Range. The carpet in the Bistro, Herringbone, is also from the Welcome Range, but this time the feel is ultra-modern – bold and there to make a statement.

The Wynnum Tavern joins a growing list of happy hotels, clubs and pubs that have turned to Artistic Flooring to deliver quality custom-made carpets in eye-catching one-off designs. Carpets that not only look good, but are also built to last.

“All our carpets come with a 20 year standard warranty when laid using our quality underlay”, is the promise made by Artistic Flooring’s Managing Director, David Williams.

“Our carpets and underlay have impervious backing, which is essential for areas where you expect drinks and other liquids to be spilt. If your carpet does not have impervious backing, fluids will slowly seep through the carpet and become trapped on the floor directly underneath. All that trapped moisture will eventually rot your carpet, breed bacteria and damage the floor beneath. Not to mention the smell…”

“Carpets are a big investment for hotels and clubs – you need to be sure they last the distance.”

Fresh new look for Gallopers Sports Club

A contemporary lift was what Gallopers Sports Club needed when it underwent a major refurbishment in April last year, and a contemporary lift was what Artistic Flooring delivered.

The old, worn, striped carpet was at the top of Management’s list of things in need of updating and our team was brought in to design and deliver a fresh and modern flooring scheme to replace it.

Lead designer on the project, Stacey Stojcevski, said she worked closely with the client to create a one-of-a-kind carpet design that was welcoming, full of warmth as well as adaptable.

“One of the challenges we faced with the design was the broad market segment the club attracts,” Stacey said, “It enjoys regular patronage from the older demographic, however being situated between Eagle Farm and Doomben race tracks it also draws in a lot of the younger, fashionable crowd.”

The brief also called for flooring design that would work across the Club’s three main public spaces; the bar, the gaming area and the bistro.

The design that ticked all the boxes and won over the client was a bold lotus-inspired pattern, created by Stacey, featuring a striking red flower motif with accents of gold in the vine work.

“It’s been deliberately designed to really catch your eye when you first walk in, and to complement other interior design elements such as the original tiling,” Stacey said, “The pop of red against a dark mahogany background has a modern-retro feel which appeals to younger as well as older generations.

General Manager of Gallopers Sports Club, Wayne Percey, said he couldn’t be more pleased with the end result.

“I was impressed by Artistic Flooring’s professional service and ability in dealing with our tight deadlines,” Mr Percey said, “We have received nothing but positive feedback on the design plus the feel of the carpet and since the upgrade we have seen a significant increase in patronage and sales.”

Our Managing Director, David Williams believes Artistic Flooring’s signature Axminster carpet makes the difference.
