Ancestors – Flood Plains, 2020 – By Sarrita King

Artist Story

After 5 years of painting imagery and stories inspired by her Aboriginal culture, Sarrita has decided to express some of the more universal concepts and philosophies taught to her by her father, the late William King. This ‘Ancestors’ painting, is layered with dots. Markings made on the land over thousands of years can be seen entangled with patterns covering the land today, such as sand hills, flora and paths made by humans and animals. Beneath the land are the waterways that have been virtually constant over time.

The river system shown meandering across the canvas, cutting through the land, a representative of the waterways found in through the lands of Sarrita’s ancestors from Katherine through the desert across to Mt. Isa. In the new Ancestors series, ‘Ancestral Pathways’ Sarrita explores the routes, landmarks and elements which the indigenous ancestors of Australia used to survive for over 40,000 years. Australian Indigenous people were nomadic and travelled vast distances for many reasons including surviving the elements, finding food and water and for sacred ceremonies.

Artist Story

Drawing on the teachings of her influential father, Tarisse recalls the philosophy he taught her – that everything in life is circular. There is no beginning and no end.

Unlike her sister, Sarrita who paints the same thematic in thick texted paint, Tarisse uses thin, flat paint sticking within the tonal variations of one colour. She creates a refined and sophisticated look and the colours of yellow, pink or blue construct a modern design. The repetition of the circle across the canvas refers to her father’s philosophy but is completed with such preciseness that it aesthetically resembles the accuracy of a print.

Artist Story

The Stylish but Explosive felt, ‘Earth Images’ is a Vibrant yet strong Woven Backed Hand Tufted New Zealand Wool Custom Rug that offers a Premium feel underfoot and can be used to bring a surge of energy to any area. Particularly great for a resort or rural bar.

Common to Aboriginal practice, Tarisse was handed down the Earth Images style to paint by her late father, William King Jungala. It is a macro view of land around the small remote town of Katherine, the area where her Gurindji tribe once inhabited. It details meandering rivers, small tributaries, active and abandoned campsites.

The impact of strong colour is immediate in these artworks and the canvas is starkly broken by the dominant and contrasting lines mapping waterways cutting their way through the land. By concentrating her background dots or placing them sparingly Tarisse manages to create a 3-D effect of landscape, as if one was seeing all the formation from a bird’s eye view.
